| Delayed age at first calving (AFC) is known to decrease productivity in dairy cattle. In the present study, we investigated AFC in heifers kept by smallholder farmers in southern Malawi and the reproductive factors influencing it. Data were obtained for 1,620 heifers over a 13-year period from 1999 to 2012. The age at first service (AFS), first service to conception interval (FSCoI), number of services per conception (NSC), conception rate (CR) and service interval (SI) were investigated in relation to AFC. The median AFC was found to be 41 months. This is a relatively high value and shows no improvement from the values reported in the 1970s and 1980s. The median AFS was also high (23 months). | The present study aimed to examine the possibility that bovine somatotropin (BST) treatment after artificial insemination (AI) may improve the fertility by the stimulation of corpus luteum (CL) function in seasonally anestrous ewes. The experiment was conducted at the Tawa Field Station, Shibecha-cho in Hokkaido, Japan, during the non-breeding season (May, 1995). Eighty-nine mature (2 to 3 years old) Suffolk and Suffolk-crossed ewes were treated with controlled internal drug release devices containing 0.3 g progesterone (CIDR-G) for 12 days. | The objective of this work was to evaluate the reproductive performance of Santa Inês ewes fed a diet supplemented with protected fat. Intervals from lambing to first clinical estrus and to conception, conception rate, prolificacy, live weight and body condition were determined. After lambing, 60 ewes and their offsprings were weighted and randomly assigned to three treatments, based on age, body weight and number of born lambs. Treatments consisted of: control diet, or control diet plus 30 g of protected fat, from lambing to day 25 of post-lambing (Sup25), or to day 60 of post-lambing (Sup60). | RESUMO Este estudo avaliou a eficiência de três protocolos de indução de estro síncronizado em ovelhas da raça Santa Inês. Vinte e quatro ovelhas adultas foram equitativamente distribuídas em três grupos, de acordo com ordem de parto, peso corporal (kg) e escore da condição corporal. As ovelhas receberam implante vaginal de progesterona natural por seis dias mais 37,5μg de d-cloprostenol laterovulvar e 300UI de eCG i.m., 24 horas antes da remoção do dispositivo.
